What makes it different
On an ordinary move, almost everything goes to the same place. On a downsize, most of what is in the house is not coming — and the work is not the carrying, it is the deciding.
So we organise everything by destination rather than by service. The new place, on to family, into storage, or cleared. Four piles, sorted at the house with you, in writing, before anything is packed. That list is the actual job, and the removal is what happens afterwards.
We look in the loft
A bedroom count describes almost none of a house like this. The volume that catches everybody out is in the spaces that are not rooms: the loft, the cellar, the garage, the shed, the fitted wardrobes, the cupboard under the stairs.
We survey those separately, which is why our first figure is sometimes larger than others you may have been given, and why it tends not to change.
We do not value and we do not buy
Deliberately, and we want to be plain about it. We are removers, not valuers or dealers. We will never make an offer on anything we are clearing, and we will never suggest that something is worth less than it is in order to take it away.
A firm that both clears your house and buys from it has an obvious conflict of interest, and this is precisely the situation in which that matters most — particularly where somebody is dealing with a parent’s house. If we think something warrants a proper opinion, we will say so and stop.
And we will not rush you
Most of this trade sells urgency, because most of it is built around completions. It is the wrong register entirely for somebody deciding whether to leave a house they have lived in for most of their adult life.
You can ring us to understand what is involved and then do nothing for a long time. That is a completely normal use of our time, and we will not follow up about it.
